What I Have Wonderful Memories Of Public Health Essay

Growing in the 80s in Lagos, Nigeria was what I equate to a game of public health Russian roulette; with waterborne illness such as cholera and dysentery lurking is every other cup of water, or typhoid and other communicable disease residing in overcrowded buses and the ever growing fear of inadequate access to care in the event of developing a chronic illness that could not be treated by over the counter antibiotics or medication from the local chemist or herbalist. Nevertheless, I have wonderful memories of growing up in Lagos, Nigeria and two particular memories were ingrained in my memory forever and have ultimately made my public health journey seem more like vocation than choice. One of the memories was my earliest memories of learning to read English, in order to save money on bus fare, my mother and I would trek from Shogunle to Oshodi, about a 2.5 mile walk to and from catching the bus to get to school and work. On this route were two giant billboards that we encountered every day, and as we passed them, I remember trying to read the billboards and my mom helping to form the words; the first billboard read â€Å"WAI: War Against indiscipline. NO liter, Queue, No noise, Stop corruption† and the second billboard read â€Å"Prevention is Better Than Cure.† I did not realize the prognostication impact of these two billboards until 25 years later when I was considering a master’s degree in public health. The natural behavior of man, whether they are good or bad, has been a disputed topic for centuries. John Locke and Thoman Hobbes, two influential enlightenment philosophers, lead this argument, even after their death. There are different work systems that are used for different industrial operations. The type and design of a work system significantly affects operation performance of the industries. A work order system is composed of a number of work cells that are arranged in a sequential order. Each work cell consists of the information of one stage of the operation. In the manufacturing operation, the work cells are used to represent each stage of the manufacturing operation. In a manufacturing system, to optimize manufacturing performance, the Hollier Algorithm is used for making optimal arrangements for work stations. The Hollier Algorithm is used for sorting part routing data and arranging work stations acc ording to the part routing data inputs. In this report, the operation chosen is manufacturing process. The effects and impacts of work order system on manufacturing performance have been discussed in this report. Work Order System and Manufacturing Performance Work Order System is an operation layout or algorithm that is used to optimize the performance of the machine on the basis of input and output. In a manufacturing process, several work planning, layout and operation algorithms are needed to optimize operation performance. Use of a suitable work order system will significantly impact the manufacturing performance. A work order system is composed of a number of work cells that are arranged in a sequential order. Each work cell consists of the information of one stage of the operation. In the manufacturing operation, the work cells are used to represent each stage of the manufacturing operation. There are two kinds of work flow diagrams pure sequential and mixed sequential. For a manufacturing operation, mixed sequential diagram is used to represent the whole process. The work flow diagrams are constructed in several stages technological stage, work allocation stage and ergonomic stage. For a manufacturing operation, the technological stage consist of the technical operations of manufacturing machines, work allocation consists of the allocation of duties to the machines as well as workers and ergonomic stage consists of other related factors like resources, methodology, post-manufacture operations and others. In manufacturing process, the parts of the work cells are called as Part Family. In a manufacturing system, to optimize manufacturing performance, the Hollier Algorithm is used for making optimal arrangements for work stations. There are a number of benefits of methods analysis in manufacturing process: Unnecessary operations or methods are analyzed and removed from the main manufacture operation. This helps in preventing extra costs and unwanted operational errors. Multiple operations can be combined together in a sequential order for avoiding too much operation time. This helps in reduction of overall manufactural timeline and operations. In manufacturing process, sometimes, the operations are not done in sequential order and hence, operational errors are found very often. Method analysis can help in rearranging the order of the operations so that the manufacturing process can be executed in the correct manner. Method analysis can also simply the operational activities of a manufacturing process. This helps in increasing efficiency and optimizing the performance of the manufacturing equipments. Methods Design Methods design follows the method analysis process and is used to design optimal design methods for manufacturing or any other industrial operation. Methods design has another set of benefits for industrial operations and manufacturing operations for this case. These benefits are follows: The problems and issues arising during the operational activities can be mitigated easily by building a suitable methods design i.e. methods design gives a proper way of operations. Methods design can be used to find suitable alternatives to existing operations. Finding alternative operation ways can provide more options as well as more optimal and efficient operational method. Methods design can also be used for implementation of new methods and operational changes. A suitable methods design is best suited for optimizing operations of the industrial equipments. Aristotle's Political Ideal Aristotles Political Ideal It is not Fortunes power to make a city good; that is a matter of scientific planning and deliberative policy. Aristotle, along with most of the prominent thinkers of his time, theorized upon what the Ideal Political State would be and through what means it could be obtained. Aristotle wrote on this discussion of the Ideal State in books VII and VIII of The Politics. What Aristotle observed around him were the prevalent city-states of ancient Greece. It is commonly believed that he did not have a vision of the large nation-state and especially not such great federations as the United States and Russia. What Aristotle referred to when he spoke about state, is a limited sized city-state that is formed by the grouping of several villages. He also believed that a nation is too large for a state: his state was about the right size so that all members of the state could meet in a single assembly. Aristotles state was nearly self-sufficient so that the bare needs of life were met and continued for the sake of a good life for its people. This continuing prosperity for the sake of a good life is what Aristotle believes the goal of the ideal state should be. Aristotle said that life is best, both for the individuals and for the cities, which has virtue sufficiently supported by material wealth to enable it to perform the action that virtue calls for it. He feels that since man, as individuals, strives for happiness, then man, as a collective group, should strive for the happiness of the state. Since it is now established what the ideal state should aim for, we may begin at what and by the Ideal State is composed. The Ideal State, of which Aristotle thought of, has as its quality of land that which is most universally productive. This would include natural resources, such as wood and crops, so that the inhabitants of the cities would have adequate amounts of food and other resources in order to be self-sufficient. The Ideal State should be a size such as the citizens can live a life of a free man where he is adequately provided for, but not a life where he lives through a vice of extravagance. (Aristotle made a clear distinction as to who should and should not be a citizen of the state. His ideal state is certainly not a democratic one that enables all who live there to be a citizen.) Ethnically speaking, the dependency on substance is highest amongst â€Å"Native Americans and the Natives of Alaska, i.e. around 17.2%† (Wheeler, 2006). Second to this are â€Å"Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders with 12.9%. Asian Americans come last with 6.3%† (Wheeler, 2006). Contrary to popular belief, blacks have lower substance dependency rates than â€Å"Hispanics and whites, 8.1 percent as compared to 9.8 and 9.2 percent, respectively†. Brief Narrative Essay

Do you remember how our parents often tell us that age old adage of â€Å"Don’t judge a book by its cover† ? Have you ever noticed how, although we know that we are not supposed to do that, we still do it anyway? I have the guts to admit that I am guilty of judging my fellowman at least once. In fact, when I was in grade school, I had misjudged one of my classmates simply because of the way she looked and her station in life because I listened to and believed in the rumors that our classmates had spread about her.This girl was known to have been raised by two spinster aunts since her birth so her ways and mannerisms in public was not that of people her age. In fact, if we did not have her for a classmate, we could have sworn that she was home schooled. She possessed an aloof attitude, sometimes seemingly eccentric and weird in her ways as well. She never hung around after classes and always seemed in a hurry to go home. She simply had no time to socialize and was irrita ted when forced to stay late at school.So we all determined that she was either abnormal or just plain weird. She was a quiet person who usually kept to herself and could often be found in the library reading up on the days lessons or just reading the available newspapers and magazines. We laughed at her often because even though she was a voracious reader, she was terrible in the Math and Science area of lessons. We had known her since pre-school and knew that she had started failing those subjects when we were in grade 3.She was the butt of all the in-jokes and we gave her no respect at all when we spoke to her. We considered her the class clown and mascot because no matter what we seemed to do to her, she could simply ignore. We considered her a challenge whom we had to break down and make cry. Then one day in English class, we were assigned to pair up and do some role playing activity. A unanimous groan went through the classroom when the girls name was announced. All of us were dreading the possibility of being stuck with her for a partner.We were convinced that it would only mean a disaster for whoever was paired with her. We had 2 weeks to work together and come up with a properly enacted and costumed scene from one of Shakespeare’s plays. I dreaded having to work with her because the class made such a big deal out it by ribbing me in public about how I did not have a prayer of getting a passing grade in the project because of my partner. She made one request of me during our partner meeting in class.Could we do the rehearsals at her house instead? She had to stay home whenever possible she explained, because her elderly aunts needed help around the house and she was worried that something might happen if she left them alone. I found this of interest, an open invitation to come over to her house and see where she lived and how she lived would be my chance to understand what made her the way she was and also confirm or deny any of the rumors float ing about in school regarding her and her home life.On my first day of practice with her, I met her very accommodating aunts who thought of me as their nieces friend from school. They were glad that she finally brought a friend over to the house because she was a lonely young woman who just spent her days reading and fussing over them. I did not have the heart to tell them I was no friend of hers. But as the days of our rehearsals progressed, I got to know her and her family better and I realized how wrong we were to have judged her just because we did not understand why she was different.If only we took the time to actually talk to her instead of tease her, we would have understood that she was really a very caring and loving person who recognized her responsibilities in life and made extra efforts to insure that she could do what was expected of her properly. Due the school activity, I came to realize that she was a special girl. She was the kind of person whom one took the time t o get to know and nurture as a friend. I decided that I would continue to befriend her regardless of what the rest of the school thought of her.Guess what, now that I am in high school, most of my grade school friends have disappeared. But this girl has remained a true and steadfast friend to me all this time. And I have helped her come out of her shell and become more sociable. True, the bad rep that was spread about her is still mentioned from time to time. But at least, I helped her get to know some other people who could really be a true friend to her. Just like I am. Truly, â€Å"one cannot judge a book by its cover† and first impressions could be wrong. Just look at how wrong I was in this situation.

The Masterpeices Of Art As We Know It – Western Art Essay Free Online Research Papers The Masterpeices Of Art As We Know It Western Art Essay When discussing masterpieces of art, the majority of people tend to think of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh or Pablo Picasso, all of whom excelled in their specific area or medium. However, most masterpieces do not simply show a refined skill in applying the medium to canvas or accurately portraying a certain subject matter- the work I have chosen as a â€Å"masterpiece† is Paul Gauguin’s â€Å"Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?† (Fig. 1), an oil on canvas image, depicting the three major stages of life. For me to consider a work of art a â€Å"great† art piece, it must force me to see something from a new and unusual perspective, or provoke me to think about some aspect of reality I have been ignorant of. The iconography, medium and style of Gauguin’s painting may not be held in the same level as Leonardo da Vinci’s â€Å"Mona Lisa† or even Michelangelo’s â€Å"David†, but any work of art that is able to communicate a message so effectively without words and still visually appeal to the viewer proves that the artist did not simply set out to paint a â€Å"pretty picture†. Gauguin’s painting can be appropriately broken into three parts- read from right to left (although it is not a continuous narrative because it does not illustrate a story)- the first section including a baby and three young women, which can be assumed to depict the first question, â€Å"Where Do We Come From†. In the center stands a youth picking a fruit from the tree of knowledge and a fair woman pondering in the distance, as these two figures seem to be questioning their existence and desire answers to life’s mysteries, suitable to be titled â€Å"What Are We†. The last section of the painting, which portrays the last question, â€Å"Where Are We Going† shows two figures, an old woman nearing death, and a mature woman also questioning her future. The dark colors of the picture seem gloomy and uninviting, and made me think about Gauguin’s mental state at the time he completed this picture. The entire mood of the painting, including the title , show Gauguin as a suicidal artist, unappreciated and ignored by the masses, as he inquires about the meaning of life and even what the future holds for him. I have to admit that Gauguin’s application of color may not seem as â€Å"neat† as previous oil painters, with him utilizing patches of color that appear slightly smeared or blotched onto the canvas. And whereas some oil painters are able to create a smooth surface effect, it seems that Gauguin has purposely completed his picture appearing very crude, with either the texture of the canvas or the numerous layers of paint seeping through. Since oil paint is usually not opaque, it also seems that Gauguin has not bothered to blend any of the shadows or lights, leaving fairly distinct borders between the various colors, for example, the green shadows on the yellow flesh are almost inhumane, due to the fact they do not appear to blend or truly create any sort of dimension on the human figure. But the way Gauguin has applied his paint and color is simply characteristic of his style, and at this point in his life, 1897, he had been heavily influenced by the Tahitian atmosphere in which he had been living in for the past few years, and there is clearly a Tahitian feeling in the image. There is a steady balance between warm and cool colors, and a decent balance between the lights and darks, although the contrast between the latter is quite distinct and force the viewer’s eyes to leap around the painting. Moreover, Gauguin was a post-impressionist, and has placed more emphasis on the form and structure of his figures, all of which are very curvaceous and round. His subject matter is also one of timelessness, not a single moment captured in an image, and is a painting that cajoles the viewer to ask himself those very questions in the title. This painting in particular is not one of my favorite works of art, specifically due to the color application and style, but I am more attracted to its message rather than aesthetic values. There is no one definition as to how a work of art can be called a â€Å"masterpiece†, but I feel that art should not simply appeal to the eye, but also to the mind, and if any piece of art forces its audience to contemplate issues that people have been increasingly ignorant of throughout the years, as well as question the artist’s objective in utilizing a certain style, medium or array of colors, can be considered a masterpiece, and Gauguin’s painting has accomplished all of the above mentioned. Definition of the Bona Fide Occupational Qualification A bona fide occupational qualification, also known as BFOQ, is a characteristic or attribute required for a job that could be considered discrimination if it were not necessary to perform the job in question, or if the job were unsafe for one category of people but not another. To determine if a policy in hiring or job assignment is discriminatory or legal, the policy is examined to ascertain whether the discrimination is necessary to the normal business operation and whether that category denied inclusion is uniquely unsafe. Exception to Discrimination Under Title VII, employers are not allowed to  discriminate  on the basis of sex,  race, religion,  or national origin. If religion, sex, or national origin can be shown to be necessary for the job, such as hiring Catholic professors to teach Catholic theology at a Catholic school, then a BFOQ exception can be made.  Ã‚  The BFOQ exception does not permit discrimination on the basis of race. The employer must prove that the BFOQ is reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the business or whether the BFOQ is for a unique safety reason. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) extended this concept of BFOQ to discrimination  based on age. Examples A restroom attendant can be hired taking into account sex because the users of the restroom have privacy rights.  In 1977, the Supreme Court upheld the policy in a male maximum security prison requiring guards to be male. A women’s clothing catalog could hire only female models to wear women’s clothes and the company would have a BFOQ defense for its sex discrimination. Being female would be a bona fide occupational qualification of the modeling job or an acting job for a specific role. However, hiring only men as managers or only women as teachers would not be a legal application of a BFOQ defense. Being a certain gender is not a BFOQ for the vast majority of jobs. Why Is This Concept Important? BFOQ is important to feminism and women’s equality. Feminists of the 1960s and other decades successfully challenged stereotypical ideas that limited women to certain professions. This often meant reexamining ideas about job requirements, which created more opportunities for women in the workplace. Johnson Controls Supreme Court decision:  International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) v. Johnson Controls, 886 F.2d 871 (7th Cir. 1989) In this case, Johnson Controls denied certain jobs to women but not to men, using the bona fide occupational qualification argument.  The jobs in question involved exposure to lead that could harm fetuses; women were routinely denied those jobs (whether pregnant or not). The appellate court ruled in favor of the company, finding that the plaintiffs had not offered an alternative that would protect a womans or a fetus health, and also that there was not evidenced that a fathers exposure to lead was a risk to the fetus. The Supreme Court held that, on the basis of the Pregnancy Discrimination in Employment Act of 1978 and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the policy was discriminatory and that ensuring fetal safety was at the core of the employees job performance, not essential to be employed in the work of making batteries.  The Court found that it was up to the company to provide safety guidelines and inform about risk, and up to workers (parents) to determine risk and take action. Justice Scalia in a concurring opinion also raised the issue of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, protecting employees from being treated differently if pregnant. The case is considered a landmark for womens rights because otherwise so many industrial jobs could be denied to women where there is a risk to fetal health.

While almost every sentence reveals another dimension of Blanches inner turbulence, the dialogue also illustrates the relationship between the sisters. She treats Stella in a patronising way and is domineering. Stella says in the text to Blanche: You never did give me a chance to say much, Blanche. So I just got in the habit of being quiet around you. In the first scene, we get to know that Blanche works as a teacher. Character Analysis of Othello â€Å"Othello† is a tragedy and Othello is a tragic hero. Othello is a general in the service of Venice. He is good, courageous, brave and trustworthy. However he has some weaknesses such as insecurity; he is too open, naà ¯ve, and gullible, Iago plays on his weaknesses which brings about his downfall and he kills himself. This causes the suffering of innocent people like Desdemona, Emilia, Cassio and Roderigo. The audience also feel pity for Othello and this creates a sense of wastage at the end. Iago’s main aim is to bring about Othello’s downfall. He has many reasons for this, such as his anger as Othello rejected him for the post of lieutenant and he hates the fact that a black man has such a high position, who has the power to reject him. Iago’s plan to destroy Othello is mainly motivated by racism. He suspects that Othello slept with his wife. This play was written by Shakespeare in the 17th century. During that time, the attitude of the people towards the black people was negative. The black people were treated as lower class citizens. This play is initially set in Venice in the mid 15th century. The Venetians would also have treated them worse and differently. Shakespeare wanted to show the black character in a positive light and create sympathy for him representing him as a victim of racism to make a comment on his society. Shakespeare uses various dramatic devices in this play. This essay will explain to what extent racism contributes to Othello’s downfall. Act 3 scene 3 is important because this is the scene where the character of Othello changes. Araby Symbols

Joyce introduces astonishing symbols in the short story Araby. Some of the symbols we talked about in the class were religion, dark, blind and other more. Specifically, Joyce expanded on symbolic imageries to set a particular scene in The North Richmond Street. With attention to, the priest became the symbol for the unknown narrator in the story. The narrator is currently residing in the dead priest’s house. According to James Joyce in Araby, â€Å"Air, musty from having been long enclosed, hung in all the rooms, and the waste room behind the kitchen was littered with old useless papers. The narrator is exploring the house while thinking about his friend’s sister. Singularly, the room is very old and definitely doesn’t smell good. It smells like a prison. It’s almost like a prisoner was trapped in jail and had died there. Correspondingly, the religion was criticized, looked upon like a jail, and a negative factor. In addition, the priest was a kind person from inside because he had donated his house, money, and furniture to his sister. For the time being, the narrator is eradicating in the room and he finds books. The following books are about religion and exploration. The priest was a innovative person. On the other hand, the priest had died just like his rusty bicycle-pump in the garage. In any case, the majority of the people are compared to the town because all of the kind people were gone. In the long run, a question comes to mind, how can Dublin become a better city? All of the good people are gone. To sum it up, the priest was represented the essential past. Furthermore, on the facade of the story another symbol is light. According to Joyce in Araby, â€Å"When were returned to the street, light from the kitchen windows had filled the areas. By definition light is something that makes things visible. Light is the ultimate hope and savior from the dark. Above all, the story continues and light is illustrated more often. â€Å"Some distant lamp or lightened window gleamed over me. †The symbol darkness was described often in the story too. The dark and blind street is the symbol of Ireland. Exclusive of, immediately the light takes the position of the country’s brighter future. Nevertheless, the light came from the kitchen window. Common Good - Actions that will benefit all groups, not a group or person. Common Good is a call to discipleship because when a disciple or just a normal person is given a problem that involves multiple parties he or she usually picks the solution that majority or all parties agree with which is common good. Stewardship - Taking management or care of something, example if plants are growing food one would take stewardship over the plants. Stewardship isn't very far from the call of discipleship because a disciple must take stewardship of all the children of God. Someone else might take stewardship of God's gift to the planet such as plants and farm animals. Rights and Duties - a duty is an obligation and a right is a entitlement. Both of these definitions go hand and hand an example would be you have the right to an education. Yet it is still your duty to go to school, even though it is a right. It is expected that you would fulfil this duty from the government (in first world countries it is a duty). Another example is we as canadians have the privilege and right to speak our mind and saw suggestions to government (such as voting), on the other hand the government's duty is to listen and chose whether it's a good decision. They're duty is also to be as honest and open with the people of the country as are the people with the government. Rights and duties relate to the call of discipleship because disciples are still humans like us they are no higher and no lower than us, we are all equals. Therefore disciples have the same right as you and me so they have the right to an education, right to a shelter, etc. Although there i s a small difference disciples enforce rights by peaceful ways such as simply talking to the people and that's their duty. Respect for Life - is respect all life whether it is the life of a saint, life of a criminal, life of a plant, life of an animal God created us and but a little bit of himself inside us and every other living organism on this planet and so when who disrespect someone else you are also directly disrespected God. In the 10 commandments the 6th commandment states "Thou shall not murder" some may understand this only towards people other may also understand towards animals. I understand this commandment as do not end anything's life without a reasonable cause such as murdering a person is breaking the commandment given by God, however killing a cow for food or cutting down a tree to create shelter is an exception for it is for survival.
